The first reaction of people who visit Japanese factories is – “The factories are so clean; you could eat-off from the floor.” For the Japanese, this is simply a matter of pride. They have invented the “5S program” which comprises a series of activities for eliminating wastes that contribute to errors, defects, and injuries in the workplace.
Our consultancy and training division has implemented 5S as a part of implementing lean manufacturing practices in 2 clusters of Mohali, each comprising of 9 units.
“A company that cannot successfully implement 5S’s cannot expect to effectively integrate JIT, re-engineering, or any other large-scale change. Good workplaces develop beginning with the 5S’s. Bad workplaces fall apart beginning with the 5S’s.”
– Hiroyuki Hirano, author of 5S: Five Pillars of the Visual Workplace.
